Brooklyn’s BAM Cinema is set to host a unique film series, “Cinema Du Cashiers,” from February 13-19. The series, curated by Dan Welch and David Cardoza, the “editors-for-life” of the NYC-based zine Cashiers Du Cinéma, will explore the often-overlooked world of cinema work through ten carefully selected films.
A Zine Comes to Life
Cashiers Du Cinéma, launched in 2023 with its fourth issue released in December, features comics, essays, and short fiction penned by current and former movie theater employees. The zine gained recognition with a mention in The Strategist’s “Best Gifts for Movie Lovers” holiday shopping guide. The film series is a natural extension of the zine’s focus on the experiences of those working in the industry.
Films and Live Readings
The series will be accompanied by live comic readings from contributors to Cashiers Du Cinéma. A.T. Pratt will present before the 1984 slasher Blood Theatre on February 13. Josh Bayer will introduce Sarah Jacobson’s Mary Jane’s Not A Virgin Anymore on February 14, and Katie Lane will perform ahead of Marie-Claude Treilhou’s Simone Barbès on February 15. J. Malzone will reprise his “Bathroom Dissertation” alongside Tsai Ming-liang’s Goodbye, Dragon Inn on February 19, following a previous performance at a Roxy Cinema screening.
Welch and Cardoza, in a statement to Filmmaker, noted the inherent challenges in depicting cinema work on screen, describing it as “low-stakes” with “inconsequential and stupid” conflicts. However, they also observed how filmmakers have used this “negative space” to explore relationships between coworkers, as seen in films like Mary Jane’s Not a Virgin Anymore and Murmur of Youth, and to launch into “extracurricular activities,” as depicted in Goodbye, Dragon Inn, Variety, and The Good Fairy.
The series also includes Cinema Paradiso and The Projectionist, which, according to Welch and Cardoza, illustrate an “over-identification with the product” and the imaginative inner life of a disillusioned booth operator, respectively. The Projectionist will be presented on a 35mm print courtesy of MoMA.
A “Cinéma Du Cashiers programme Guide” zine, featuring 11 original comics and essays, will be available for purchase at each screening, alongside back issues of Cashiers Du Cinéma.
