What the NASCAR Cook Out Clash is and why it matters | Sports
The Cook Out Clash, NASCAR’s annual preseason exhibition race, is set to begin on February 4 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, after a delay due to weather conditions. This event, while not contributing to championship standings, is widely considered by fans as the unofficial restart of the NASCAR Cup Series season.
The History
Since 1979, the Cook Out Clash has evolved, changing locations to reflect NASCAR’s approach to tradition and fan engagement. From 1979 through 2021, the race was held at Daytona International Speedway. In 2022, it moved to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, remaining there through 2024. Beginning in 2025, NASCAR relocated the Clash to Bowman Gray Stadium.
The move to Bowman Gray Stadium emphasizes short-track racing and NASCAR’s grassroots history. Bowman Gray is known for its tight layout and intense atmosphere, offering a “rough, old-school feel” that reflects the sport’s origins.
The Format
The Cook Out Clash format is designed to create a high-intensity return to racing. The main event consists of 200 laps with a 23-car field. Starting positions are determined through practice, qualifying and a Last Chance Qualifier.
Qualifying
Cars are divided into three practice groups, participating in two practice sessions. A third session serves as the qualifying round. The top 20 drivers from this session automatically advance to the Clash. Drivers who don’t qualify through practice and qualifying compete in a 75-lap Last Chance Qualifier, where only green-flag laps are counted. The top two finishers from this qualifier will also advance.
The final starting position is awarded to the highest-ranked driver in 2025 points who has not already secured a spot in the field, rewarding season-long consistency.
Where to Watch
The Last Chance Qualifier is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. On FOX, with the Cook Out Clash following at 6 p.m., also airing live on FOX. Full coverage will also be available on MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
Tickets remain available through NASCARCLASH.com for those interested in attending in person.
