You will never be forgotten’ – Funeral details announced for suspected murderer who died in Garda custody

June 19, 2026 discoverhiddenusacom News

Lee McDonnell, a 34-year-old career criminal with more than 130 convictions, died in Garda custody earlier this month. Armed Gardai arrested McDonnell for allegedly breaching bail conditions connected to a live case, according to reports. He was the prime suspect in the death of Thomas Griffin and the 2022 murder of Gary Carey.

Who was Lee McDonnell?

McDonnell was a Ballyfermot native and a career criminal. He was the prime suspect in an attack on 32-year-old Thomas Griffin, who died in St James’ Hospital. Griffin was found injured by the River Liffey following an alleged attack at the War Memorial Gardens in Islandbridge.

Did You Know? Lee McDonnell had more than 130 convictions during his lifetime.

What other crimes was McDonnell suspected of?

Reports state McDonnell was suspected of being the gunman who murdered 40-year-old Gary “the Canary” Carey. Carey was shot in August 2022 as he exited the gym of the Hilton Hotel in Kilmainham. Carey died six weeks after the shooting.

Expert Insight: Samantha Carter notes that the death of a prime suspect in multiple active investigations can create a void in the judicial process. This may prevent the formal resolution of cases, potentially leaving the families of victims without a definitive legal verdict.

What are the funeral arrangements?

McDonnell will be laid to rest on Monday at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Ballyfermot. Following the service, he will be buried at Newlands Cross.

A death notice stated he is “reunited with his beloved mother Olivia and Nanny Mc.” He is survived by his daughter Abbie, his partner, and his brothers and sisters. One mourner wrote, “RIP Lee you will never be forgotten.”

What may happen next?

The death of a suspect in custody could lead to an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the arrest and subsequent death. Because McDonnell was the prime suspect in the Griffin and Carey cases, these legal proceedings may be affected or potentially closed, as the primary accused is no longer available for trial.
