Yrki Arkitektar places Swan Nest overlooking Icelandic volcano
Icelandic architecture firm Yrki Arkitektar has completed Swan Nest, a summerhouse designed for the family of one of its founders, Ásdís Helga Ágústsdóttir. The two-story dwelling is located on a site overlooking the stratovolcano Hekla and is designed to feel embedded in the surrounding landscape.
A Design Rooted in the Icelandic Landscape
Swan Nest’s design incorporates a dark palette of concrete, metal, and stone, referencing the craggy surface of nearby lava fields. The structure is partially sunk into its site, featuring a cubic timber-clad form nestled between two large concrete retaining walls. Ágústsdóttir explained the project is “deeply shaped by its site – a semi-remote retreat near a river, surrounded by vast, unspoiled nature formed by volcanic forces.”
Interior Spaces and Materials
The lower level of Swan Nest houses the main bedroom, bathroom, and sauna, designed to create a more enclosed “sanctuary.” Above, the ground floor contains the living, dining, and kitchen areas, alongside an additional bedroom. These spaces open onto a continuous timber deck accessible through large sliding glass doors. A volcano-shaped skylight, lined with concrete, illuminates the living space, while a porthole window in the kitchen frames a view of Hekla.
Throughout the interior, darker tones contrast with the surrounding grassland and snow-capped volcano. Dark steel, concrete, and marble are used to allude to the geological processes of lava fields. The roof is finished with grass to blend with the landscape, and the exterior timber cladding will gradually silver over time.
Looking Ahead
Yrki Arkitektar, founded in 1997 by Ágústsdóttir and Sólveig Berg, continues to contribute to Iceland’s architectural landscape. Other recent Icelandic home projects include a black metal-clad cabin by Studio Bua and a renovated home by ARG Architects. This project will inspire further designs that integrate seamlessly with Iceland’s unique volcanic terrain. Further developments in sustainable building materials could also influence future projects in the region.
