Zurich Pride Festival Cancelled, Parade to Continue
Zurich Pride, Switzerland’s largest event for LGBTQ+ individuals, will proceed this year with significant changes. The two-day festival has been cancelled, but organizers confirmed the demonstration march scheduled for June 20th will continue as planned.
Festival Cancellation Follows Financial Concerns
The decision to cancel the festival came after an extraordinary general assembly of the Zurich Pride association. Initially, organizers considered moving the event from the Landiwiese to the smaller Turbinenplatz due to financial difficulties. They also explored introducing ticket prices to help secure funding.
However, several major companies reduced or ended their sponsorships, leaving the organization facing a shortfall of at least 100,000 Swiss francs. Members voted to cancel the festival altogether.
Community Input Drove the Decision
According to Pride Managing Director Julia Müller, the proposed changes – relocating the event and implementing ticketing – were not well-received. “The community therefore submitted a motion to cancel this year, so that You can recover and start in 2027 with new ideas,” Müller stated.
Eighty members attended the extraordinary general assembly, a record number, and a clear majority – including the board – decided to cancel the festival. Müller explained that members were concerned about the future of Pride and that the board was at risk of burnout.
Organizers acknowledge the festival will likely be smaller in the future due to financial realities. Müller noted that corporate sponsorship of LGBTQ+ and sustainability initiatives has declined in recent years. The high costs associated with the Landiwiese location also contributed to the decision.
Future Plans and Continued Demonstration
While the festival is cancelled, organizers are considering alternative locations, including a return to the Kasernenareal or decentralized street festivals throughout the city. Planning for the 2027 event will begin this summer.
Despite the festival’s cancellation, the demonstration march will proceed. Müller emphasized that the march remains the most visible aspect of Pride and will be “large and colorful.” The city of Zurich affirmed that Pride is an important event for promoting diversity, equality, and combating discrimination.
