Can TrumpRx help you save money on drugs? Here’s what experts say.

Can TrumpRx help you save money on drugs? Here’s what experts say.

February 14, 2026 discoverhiddenusacom Health

President Trump recently launched TrumpRx, a platform designed to offer discounted prescription drugs. While the administration touts the initiative as a potentially “transformative” healthcare step, experts suggest its impact may be limited in scope and accessibility.

A Limited Reach for Savings

The core of the concern centers on who benefits from TrumpRx. According to Yunan Ji, a health policy expert at Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business, the discounts are primarily available to those paying in cash or whose insurance doesn’t adequately cover the medications. This means the program won’t fundamentally alter drug pricing for the majority of Americans who rely on insurance plans.

Did You Know? TrumpRx launched on February 5th with a catalogue of over 40 brand-name drugs, with plans to expand the list over time.

Anthony Wright, executive director of Families USA, acknowledges the effort to lower drug prices but describes TrumpRx as a “catalogue of coupons from existing programs from drug companies” rather than a comprehensive price comparison tool. He also expressed a desire for the platform to include a wider range of medications, including those used in cancer treatment.

How Were These Discounts Achieved?

The White House attributes the discounts to “most-favored-nation” agreements negotiated with pharmaceutical firms. These agreements require drugmakers to offer U.S. Customers prices comparable to those available in other countries with lower drug costs. The administration also emphasizes that TrumpRx focuses on branded drugs, acknowledging that cheaper generic alternatives often exist.

A key limitation is that TrumpRx discounts require cash purchases, meaning individuals cannot utilize their health insurance benefits and the costs won’t count toward their deductible. As Wright explained, the platform is “focused pretty narrowly on people who are uninsured and are buying prescription drugs with cash rather than through a health plan.”

Expert Insight: The reliance on cash payments inherently restricts access to TrumpRx for individuals who depend on insurance coverage, potentially exacerbating existing healthcare disparities.

TrumpRx vs. Existing Discount Programs

An analysis by Patients For Affordable Drugs Now (P4ADNow) compared TrumpRx pricing to that of GoodRx, another discount medication service. The analysis revealed that TrumpRx offered superior pricing on only eight drugs:

  • Bevespi (chronic bronchitis) — 89% discount through TrumpRx
  • Cetrotide (fertility) — 93% discount through TrumpRx
  • Farxiga (Type 2 Diabetes) — 52% discount through TrumpRx
  • Genotropin (human growth hormone) — 60% discount through TrumpRx
  • Insulin Lispro (blood sugar control) — 65% discount through TrumpRx
  • Ovidrel (fertility) — 67% discount through TrumpRx
  • Xigduo XR (Type 2 Diabetes) — 70% discount through TrumpRx
  • Zepbound (weight loss) — 72% discount through TrumpRx

GoodRx matched TrumpRx’s discounts on 33 drugs, and generic alternatives were available for 15 medications listed on TrumpRx. For instance, a generic version of Colestid, used to lower cholesterol, costs $21.70, while the TrumpRx price is $67.20.

The discounts are particularly relevant for medications often not covered by insurance, such as Ozempic and Wegovy for weight loss, and fertility drugs like Gonal-F. Both TrumpRx and GoodRx offer Ozempic for $199 for a 0.25 milligram pen, a significant reduction from its list price of over $1,000. Gonal-F is available for $252 with a coupon from either platform, compared to a list price of nearly $1,200.

Drug Discounts Available Through TrumpRx

Currently, TrumpRx offers discounts on a total of 43 drugs, including Abrilada pen (autoimmune), Airsupra (respiratory), Azulfidine Tabs (rheumatology), Bevespi (respiratory), Cetrotide (IVF), Chantix (smoking cessation), and many others. (A complete list is available in the source material.)
