Diane Lane joins Scarlett Johansson in Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist – 2027 Release Date
A new chapter is unfolding in the iconic horror franchise The Exorcist, with Diane Lane joining the cast alongside Scarlett Johansson and Jacobi Jupe. The film, helmed by Mike Flanagan, is currently slated for release on March 10, 2027.
A Shift in Direction for a Classic
This project arrives after a previous attempt to revive the series, L’Exorciste – Dévotion, fell short of expectations in 2023. That film earned $136 million against a $30 million budget and received a low audience rating of 1.8/5. Following this outcome, Blumhouse opted to move away from the initially planned trilogy.
Universal, having invested $400 million in the rights to the Exorcist saga, turned to Mike Flanagan to revitalize the franchise. Flanagan, known for his work on The Haunting of Hill House and Doctor Sleep, will serve as the writer, producer, and director.
The upcoming film is described as a “radical departure” from the 1973 original directed by William Friedkin. Details regarding the plot remain confidential, but it will reportedly disregard the events of L’Exorciste – Dévotion, offering a fresh perspective on the story.
Flanagan expressed his honor at being entrusted with this project in June 2024, stating his intention to approach the material with a “terrifying and audacious” vision. He also welcomed the opportunity to collaborate once again with his partners at Blumhouse.
Filming is scheduled to begin soon in New York.
