Et le reste c’est de la sauce sur les cailloux: Radical Art & Audience
The Théâtre des Célestins is currently hosting a new production, Et le reste c’est de la sauce sur les cailloux, from artists Sacha Ribeiro and Alice Vannier. This follows their previous work, Radio Lapin, presented in November. The new piece explores artistic radicalism and its connection to audiences.
A Collaborative Beginning
Sacha Ribeiro and Alice Vannier first met at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Techniques du Théâtre (ENSATT) in Lyon. They subsequently co-founded the Compagnie Courir à la catastrophe in 2018. Their work aims to create theater that is deeply connected to life, constantly questioning and examining the mechanisms of their art and their own identities.
Inspired by Filmmakers
Et le reste c’est de la sauce sur les cailloux draws inspiration from the work and lives of filmmakers Danièle Huillet (1936-2006) and Jean-Marie Straub (1933-2022). The production questions the value of artistic rigor and its potential limitations.
The Play’s Structure
The play unfolds as a theatrical “mise en abîme,” where two artists are shown rehearsing while discovering a documentary, Où gît votre sourire enfoui ? by Pedro Costa, about Huillet and Straub. This prompts an examination of how radical artistic choices can limit a work’s audience. The production asks fundamental questions: for whom and why do artists create? Does formal rigor necessarily equate to elitism?
The two characters, portrayed by Alice Vannier and Sacha Ribeiro, engage in debate and moments of levity, described as “advancing like tightrope walkers on the stretched wire of an era that constantly doubts and confronts their desires.”
What’s Next?
the production will spark further discussion about the role of art in society and the responsibilities of artists. The play’s exploration of audience and accessibility could influence future theatrical works. The Compagnie Courir à la catastrophe may continue to explore similar themes in their upcoming projects.
