February 18, 2026 discoverhiddenusacom News

The historic city of Ferrara, Italy, is preparing to welcome back the marathon, with the 41st edition of the Ferrara Marathon scheduled for Sunday, February 28, 2027. The event will also include the Ferrara Half Marathon 21K and the Ferrara 10K races.

A Long-Standing Tradition

The relationship between Ferrara and the marathon dates back to 1979, initially as the Vigarano Maratona, before moving to Ferrara in 1999. A total of forty official marathons were held between 1979 and 2019, with a revival event taking place in 2023 featuring different distances.

Did You Know? The first running competitions on long distances in Ferrara took place as early as 1909, demonstrating a long-held connection between the city and endurance running.

The most recent event, held on September 24, 2023, saw approximately 2,500 athletes participate in the 21, 30, and 10-kilometer races, branded as ‘Corriferrara’. This event marked a return after disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and a postponement in 2022 due to elections.

A Legacy of Runners

Throughout its history, the Ferrara Marathon has attracted notable athletes, including Orlando Pizzolato, a two-time New York City Marathon winner (1984-1985), Salvatore Bettiol, a bronze medalist at the 1987 Seoul World Championships, Laura Fogli, a two-time European Championship silver medalist, and Massimo Magnani, a two-time Olympian who is now a coach. Today, the race welcomes champion Iliass Aouani, a European champion and World bronze medalist, and fellow Italian athlete Elisa Palmero, fresh off a successful performance in Seville.

Expert Insight: The revival of the Ferrara Marathon signifies a commitment to continuing a decades-long sporting tradition, leveraging the city’s historical connection to running and building towards its designation as the European City of Sport in 2027.

The organization of the event has been entrusted to Ravenna InSport, with technical support from Ravenna Runners Club. The new direction of the marathon, according to Sport Assessor Francesco Carità, builds upon the work of those who established and maintained the event for the first forty years.

Looking Ahead

Organizers acknowledge the legacy of individuals like Nicola Stella, Giancarlo Corà, and Massimo Corà, who were instrumental in the marathon’s development. With a year to go before the February 2027 event, organizers are focused on preparing a comprehensive logistical operation to meet expectations. The event will see increased participation and international recognition as it aims to recapture its former glory.
