Food Rescue in Upper Austria: “IS NU GUAT” Fights Food Waste & Helps People
For five years, the “Save Food, Warm People” association has been raising awareness about food waste. Currently, 188 volunteers across Upper Austria are actively participating in the “IS NU GUAT” campaign to make a difference.
Combating Waste, Supporting the Community
The association is hosting a month-long event at Linz’s main square, offering free, freshly cooked meals from a pop-up store. “We can not only save food here, but also educate and raise awareness,” says Doris Weissengruber-Humer, chairwoman and founding member.
The initiative extends beyond a simple meal service. Events include Wednesday brunches, cooking workshops, and even a special Valentine’s Day buffet for singles. Weissengruber-Humer emphasizes that the project addresses both environmental protection and the needs of vulnerable populations.
“We see a diverse group of people here: young people, mothers with children, and pensioners,” explains Weissengruber-Humer. “We also have a regular group of homeless individuals who always receive a meal.” The association collaborates with homeless shelters, emergency accommodations, and women’s shelters throughout Upper Austria, providing them with rescued food.
Volunteer Driven
The Lebensmittelretter (Food Savers) are primarily funded by voluntary donations. “We also welcome new people who want to help and make a statement against food waste. All you need is a car and a few hours of your time in the evening, once or twice a week,” says the founder.
The association receives its food from approximately 70 partner businesses across Upper Austria. “Businesses interested in participating are welcome to contact us. We are on the road every day and are happy to partner with anyone who wants to avoid waste,” Weissengruber-Humer adds.
From Pop-Up to Food Truck
The city of Linz provides the space on the main square free of charge each month to the winners of an application process. The organizations themselves are responsible for the interior design. The association’s furniture and cooking utensils were collected by its members. “I don’t even have spoons and knives at home anymore, because we need them all here,” the chairwoman notes.
While the pop-up store will close at the end of February, the “IS NU GUAT” campaign will continue. The association will also be present at events like Bubble Days, the Linz Children’s Klangwolke (Sound Cloud), and the Linz Marathon with its food truck.
