Home test kit seeks to limit spread
LymeAlert, a 15-minute home tick test priced at $40, is scheduled to go on sale in August. Founded by pediatric orthopedic physician assistant Erin Dawicki, the device allows users to determine if a tick carries Lyme disease bacteria before visiting a doctor, according to the company.
How does the LymeAlert test work?
The test uses a plastic container with a built-in grinder to process up to five ticks into a pulp. Users then insert a piece of chemically treated paper that changes color if Lyme disease bacteria are present, according to founder Erin Dawicki.
Dawicki developed the concept while pursuing an MBA at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management. She collaborated with four fellow students and her husband, a mechanical engineer, to create the product.
Why is early detection critical for Lyme disease?
Infectious disease experts state that antibiotics should be administered within 72 hours of detecting a tick. Dawicki noted that for positive results, a single dose of antibiotics can provide a strong chance of preventing the disease.
The home test aims to reduce unnecessary medical expenses and the overuse of antibiotics. Dawicki stated that unnecessary doses increase the risk of diseases becoming drug-resistant.
What are the risks of home tick testing?
Armin Alaedini, chief scientific officer of the Global Lyme Alliance, warned that false positives could mislead users and cause panic. He stated that the best course of action remains visiting a doctor after a tick bite.
Alaedini also noted that LymeAlert cannot detect other infectious agents, such as the substance that causes Alpha-gal syndrome. Dawicki conceded the test cannot identify every hazard.
What happens next for LymeAlert?
The company is working on a future version of the test that may detect other pathogens, which Dawicki hopes to bring to market next year.
LymeAlert is also developing a smartphone app for anonymous reporting of infected tick locations. The company plans to overlay this user data with migratory animal data and NASA satellite data to create an AI predictive algorithm that could track where different pathogens and tick species are likely to spread.
