Iowa Hawkeyes football hires four new staff members
Iowa football bolstered its support staff on February 6th with the announcement of four new hires, all serving in analyst roles. The additions, revealed by the programme, aim to enhance preparation and provide fresh perspectives as the Hawkeyes look ahead to the upcoming season.
Strengthening the Coaching Staff
Kirk Ferentz, head coach of the Hawkeyes, emphasized the value of these analytical positions. “Hiring analysts to support our football programme makes us better in every way,” Ferentz said. “Analysts allow our coaching staff to get a jump start on preparation and can offer a fresh perspective on trends and opportunities as we prepare for the season. I am pleased to add these four leaders to support our football programme.”
New Roles and Experienced Faces
Jay Norvell will contribute as the senior football analyst for offense. Norvell is a former Iowa player, having competed for the Hawkeyes in the 1980s and brings head coaching experience from his tenures at Nevada and Colorado State. Kevin Spencer will focus on special teams quality control, returning to Iowa City with nearly five decades of coaching experience and after previous stints with the Hawkeyes in 2017-18 and 2020-21.
Kyle Hazell will serve as an offensive analyst, building on his recent experience as an offensive graduate assistant and assistant quarterbacks coach at Toledo (2025-26) and Youngstown State (2024-25), and as an offensive graduate assistant and tight ends coach at Dayton (2023-24). Completing the group is Mac McLeran, a North Liberty native, who will work as a defensive analyst after four seasons (2022-25) as the defensive run game coordinator and linebackers coach at Southern Illinois.
