Jupiter Medical Center to close pediatric unit
Jupiter Medical Center (JMC) will discontinue its inpatient pediatric care services on April 1, shifting the 12 dedicated beds to accommodate expanding maternity and childbirth services. This change marks the end of the only inpatient pediatric unit in northern Palm Beach County.
Responding to Community Needs
According to Dr. Amit Rastogi, president and CEO of JMC, the decision is a result of ongoing evaluation of community healthcare needs. “As the region’s leading independent medical center, we continuously evaluate and respond to what our community needs most,” Dr. Rastogi stated. The hospital reports that demand for maternal services currently exceeds capacity, a situation exacerbated by the closure of other obstetrics programs in the surrounding area.
Continued Pediatric Services
Despite the closure of the inpatient unit, JMC will maintain its Mastroianni Family Pediatric Emergency Department, which provides care to approximately 8,500 children annually. The hospital’s Level II De George Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, offering advanced care for newborns, will also remain operational. Patients requiring inpatient pediatric care will be transferred to other facilities.
Access to Alternative Care
The closest children’s hospital is Palm Beach Children’s Hospital at St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, located 15 miles away, and offering 93 dedicated pediatric beds. Tenet Healthcare, which operates St. Mary’s, also provides inpatient pediatric care at West Boca Medical Center. Additional options include Palms West in Loxahatchee, owned by HCA Healthcare, and Tradition Medical Center in Port St. Lucie, affiliated with the Cleveland Clinic.
Dr. Rastogi emphasized that pathways are in place to ensure children receive necessary inpatient care at regional hospitals, stating, “Parents can feel confident that if a child ever needs inpatient care, we have pathways to the region’s pediatric hospitals.” JMC reports that, on average, only one of the 12 pediatric beds was occupied at any given time.
Expansion Plans
Alongside the shift in pediatric services, JMC is expanding its maternity and childbirth facilities with the addition of 12 postpartum beds and two obstetrics operating rooms. The hospital, with a total of 344 beds, is also completing a five-story Patient Care Tower, adding 92 beds for adult orthopedic care, and rehabilitation. JMC is affiliated with the Hospital for Special Surgery, which will conduct orthopedic surgeries at the medical center.
