La Vespa review: The gloriously battered prawns are indeed the Dublin Bay variety

La Vespa review: The gloriously battered prawns are indeed the Dublin Bay variety

June 4, 2026 discoverhiddenusacom Entertainment

Our evening at La Vespa in Dublin 2 began with a chaotic taxi ride that included a minor collision, a shattered window, and a confrontation with a bus driver—plus a dramatic arrest of a drunken tourist. Despite the turbulence, the restaurant’s Italian staff and carefully curated menu transformed the experience into a memorable one.

The taxi incident unfolded on South Great George’s Street when our van-based cab collided with a bus. The driver’s anger escalated as the window shattered upon exiting, leading to a heated exchange. A passing bus and a subsequent arrest of a visibly intoxicated tourist added to the scene. Yet, we arrived at La Vespa just in time for our reservation.

La Vespa, a new Italian restaurant in Castle Market, is part of a duo with La Maison, both operated by Giorgio Urbani. The all-Italian team includes head chef Paolo Orlando, a Sicilian with experience across Italy and Ireland, and Sardinian pasta chef Eliana Marteddu. Their focus on regional classics and fresh ingredients sets the tone for the dining experience.

The menu features Dublin Bay prawns, a rare find in local cuisine, and dishes like fritto misto, handmade cappelletti, and tagliolini with langoustine. The ambiance prioritizes comfort and conversation, with a flexible wine list and no rigid dining rules. A meal for two with a bottle of wine costs €148.50.

Did You Know? La Vespa’s menu includes Dublin Bay prawns, a seafood ingredient rarely seen in Irish restaurants, highlighting the restaurant’s focus on local and regional provenance.

Expert Insight: The restaurant’s emphasis on hospitality and comfort aligns with broader trends in experiential dining, where the atmosphere and service can be as impactful as the food itself. However, the incident preceding the meal underscores how external factors can shape a diner’s expectations and emotional state.

The staff’s warm welcome and the quality of dishes like the affogato and saltimbocca helped ease the stress of the evening. Yet, the contrast between the chaotic arrival and the serene dining experience raises questions about how restaurants can prepare for unpredictable guest journeys.

As La Vespa continues to operate, its ability to balance consistent quality with adaptability to unexpected challenges could influence its reputation. With a focus on accessibility, Italian classics, and a relaxed atmosphere, it may attract a loyal local following.

What seafood is featured in La Vespa’s menu? Dublin Bay prawns and langoustine are highlighted in dishes like the fritto misto and tagliolini.

Who is the head chef at La Vespa? Paolo Orlando, originally from Sicily, brings regional Italian cuisine to the restaurant after working in Ireland and Italy.

What is the cost of a meal for two at La Vespa? A two-person meal with a bottle of wine totals €148.50.

Could the unique combination of challenges and hospitality at La Vespa set a new standard for restaurant resilience in Dublin’s dining scene?
