LG H&H Unveils AI-Powered Non-Steroidal Solution for Female Hair Loss
LG Household & Health Care has introduced a new approach to managing female hair loss by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its research. The company presented these findings on May 30 at the World Congress for Hair Research (WCHR) held at COEX in Seoul.
The research focuses on moving away from traditional steroid-based or hormone-centric treatments. Instead, the team has explored non-steroidal solutions to improve scalp and hair health.
The Role of AI in Identifying New Targets
To identify effective treatments, researchers used AI simulations to analyze approximately 420,000 candidate substances. They integrated gene expression information and lipid metabolism data specifically linked to female hair loss.

This process led to the identification of Estrogen Receptor alpha (ERα) as a primary target. The team discovered that a non-steroidal substance derived from Vitamin A could activate this receptor.
According to lead researcher Kim Jae-yoon, this substance may help promote hair follicle activity and improve the environment for hair growth. Clinical evaluations have already confirmed an improvement in hair thickness.
Expanding the Scope of Hair Research
A significant aspect of this study is the expansion of the research scope. While previous hair loss studies primarily focused on dermal papilla cells, this new approach includes hair follicle stem cells.
By activating estrogen receptors, the researchers suggest it may be possible to influence both dermal papilla cells and hair follicle stem cells, establishing a new strategy for hair loss management.
