Memorial service to be held in Christchurch to mark 15 years since 2011 earthquake

Memorial service to be held in Christchurch to mark 15 years since 2011 earthquake

February 21, 2026 discoverhiddenusacom News

Christchurch, New Zealand, today marks the 15th anniversary of the devastating February 22, 2011 earthquake. A public memorial service will be held at the Canterbury National Earthquake Memorial, located at the corner of Cambridge Terrace and Montreal Street, to remember the 185 lives lost and the widespread destruction that followed the magnitude 6.3 quake.

Remembering the Earthquake’s Impact

The earthquake, which struck at 12:51 pm, resulted in the demolition of thousands of homes due to damage to both buildings and the land itself. During the memorial service, a minute’s silence will be observed at the exact time of the earthquake, and the names of all 185 victims will be read aloud as the HMNZS Canterbury bell tolls.

Did You Know? The earthquake struck at 12:51 pm, and a minute’s silence will be held at that same time during today’s memorial service.

Deputy Mayor Victoria Henstock will lay a wreath on behalf of the city, and members of the public are invited to leave floral tributes following the ceremony. Christchurch City Council spokesman Duncan Sandeman stated that the service is intended as a space for the community to reflect on the earthquake’s impact and remember those who perished.

From Red Zones to Parkland and a Cathedral’s Uncertain Future

Fifteen years after the disaster, much of the land previously cleared of homes – known as the “red zone” – has been transformed into parkland. An 11km cycle and walking path, the City to Sea Pathway, now winds through this area, connecting New Brighton to the central city.

The Anglican Christ Church Cathedral, a long-standing symbol of Christchurch, sustained significant damage in the earthquake and remains fenced off in Cathedral Square. While stabilization and strengthening work began, it was halted in August 2024 due to a budget shortfall of approximately $85 million.

The Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement Limited (CCRL) is now pursuing a phased reopening plan, beginning with the tower, nave, and western wall, including the rose window. This initial phase would provide seating for around 700 people. The CCRL hopes to achieve a complete reopening of the cathedral by 2030, though it has occasionally opened for events and tours with visitors required to wear hard hats and high-visibility vests.

Expert Insight: The ongoing challenges with the cathedral’s restoration highlight the complex financial and logistical hurdles involved in rebuilding after a major natural disaster, even years after the initial event.

The Unresolved Justice for the CTV Building Collapse

For families who lost loved ones in the collapse of the Canterbury Television (CTV) building, the anniversary serves as a painful reminder of what they consider a “preventable disaster” and a perceived failure of the justice system. A total of 115 people died when the six-story building collapsed, later found to have significant design flaws.

Despite police uncovering evidence of negligence, they decided against prosecution in 2017. Maan Alkaisi, spokesperson for the CTV Families Group, whose wife was among those killed, argues that this lack of accountability reveals fundamental flaws within the legal system.

Alkaisi plans to invite Attorney-General Judith Collins to discuss the reversal of the initial decision to prosecute those found negligent. He emphasized that this request is not politically motivated but rather an attempt to restore faith in a system he believes has failed 115 New Zealanders and their families. He stated, “The Story Does Not Finish Here.”
