Microboard & Napatech Respond to Urgent Ebola Crisis in the DRC
The World Health Organization (WHO) declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern following an Ebola outbreak in Bunia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, announced May 15. The outbreak is caused by the rare and deadly Bundibugyo virus strain, with more than 670 confirmed cases and more than 136 confirmed fatalities reported to date.
Microboard and the Danish technology company Napatech have partnered to deliver emergency aid to the region. Napatech provided a $5,000 donation to bypass administrative delays and accelerate the delivery of clean water, masks, and protective supplies.
Lee Cantelon, Microboard’s Director of Humanitarian Missions, coordinated the response with two Bunia-based organizations: the Rebuilders and Compassion Ministry. These partners are currently distributing hygiene supplies and protective gear in city centers and Internally Displaced Persons camps.
Why is the Bundibugyo Ebola strain a concern?
Health officials have raised concerns about this specific outbreak due to the nature of the Bundibugyo strain, which is described as especially deadly. According to the report, the severity of the current crisis is linked to both the strain’s lethality and the late detection of initial cases.

The epicenter in Bunia has necessitated immediate sanitation interventions to protect vulnerable populations. Access to clean water is a primary priority for prevention and sanitation to stop further spread of the virus.
How are humanitarian groups responding in Bunia?
Microboard established a clean water borehole at the Rebuilders center in less than 24 hours. This represents a record for the organization, which has 15 years of experience in borehole installation and clean water development.
Public safety messaging is being disseminated via the Rebuilders FM radio station. This station serves as a primary broadcaster of lifesaving information throughout the Ituri Province.
What could happen next in the DRC outbreak?
Microboard is likely to continue monitoring the situation through direct communication with teams in Bunia. Future efforts may focus on expanding the distribution of protective gear and hygiene supplies to more crowded displacement camps.
Depending on the effectiveness of the current sanitation and awareness campaigns, the spread of the virus could be curtailed. However, the continued presence of the Bundibugyo strain may require sustained international attention and resource mobilization.
