Monica Sampson: Queer Shakespeare Founder & Phoenix Theatre Leader
A new theatrical force is reshaping performance spaces in Arizona and beyond. Monica Sampson, founder and artistic director of All Queer Shakespeare (AQS), is gaining recognition for her innovative work and commitment to inclusive storytelling.
A Rising Star in the Theatre World
Sampson launched AQS in 2024, an all LGBTQIA+ Shakespearean theatre company. Since its inception, AQS has quickly gained visibility, participating in events like London Pride and Seattle Pride, and presenting talks at universities and theatres across the U.S., U.K., and Europe. Sampson also operates the Sampson Studio, where she has spent over a decade training performers using trauma-informed and anatomy-based techniques.
Local Impact and National Recognition
Sampson’s work extends beyond AQS and the Sampson Studio. She directs and acts locally in Arizona, and has been featured on NPR, PBS, and NBC, as well as at prominent Arizona theatres including Phoenix Theatre Company, Childsplay, and Arizona Theatre Company. Her recent work, “Six Rounds of Vengeance,” was highlighted by KJZZ.
Looking Ahead
Following a sold-out first season, AQS is preparing for its second season, titled “A Season of Collaboration.” Sampson’s stated mission for the upcoming season is to demonstrate that the principles of inclusion and diversity are universally valuable, extending beyond the scope of a specifically queer company. This season will involve partnerships with other theatre groups and artists.
Artists within the community have voiced strong support for Sampson and AQS. Ezra neighbours, a core company member, stated Sampson “is changing the landscape of our hometown.” Taryn Landis added that Sampson has fostered “a wonderful, welcoming, and kind community of like-minded theatre artists” in Phoenix, praising her work as a director and intimacy coordinator as “invaluable and unmatched.”
A Lifelong Passion
Sampson credits a young age experience with sparking her passion for theatre. Watching a marathon of Barbra Streisand films – Hello, Dolly!, Funny Girl, and Yentl – at age eight, she realised the power of being a creator. She recalled that seeing Streisand credited as director, producer, and star “clicked” for her, and she has been “unapologetically” herself ever since. Sampson identifies as a plus-size, Jewish, queer woman and feels fortunate to have built creative opportunities and pursued joy in the theatre.
