Portland Hearts of Pine to launch a women’s soccer team in 2027
The Portland Hearts of Pine have officially expanded their footprint in Maine. The professional soccer club announced Thursday that it has been granted a USL W League franchise, with the women’s team scheduled to begin play in May 2027.
This new addition aims to establish a visible pathway for female athletes across the state. According to club leadership, the move is designed to expand access to the sport and the matchday experience.
Bridging the Gap in Women’s Soccer
The USL W League operates as a pre-professional association. It’s specifically designed to bridge the gap between youth, college, and professional play.
A key feature of the league is its alignment with the college calendar, running from May through July. This structure allows high-level collegiate players to compete during the summer while maintaining their NCAA eligibility.
Built on Community Input
The decision to launch the team followed a series of community town halls held in March. Feedback indicated a strong connection to the Hearts of Pine identity.
However, the community also emphasized the importance of the women’s team having its own distinct culture, voice, and sense of purpose.
A Growing Regional Ecosystem
The new franchise will join the USL W League’s Northeast Division. They are expected to compete alongside clubs such as Hartford Athletic and Vermont Green FC.
Maine already hosts other pro-am women’s teams, including the Portland-based Maine Footy and the Maine Mystics FC in the Lewiston-Auburn area. Both currently compete in United Women’s Soccer.
Katelyn St. Hilaire, vice president of Maine Mystics, noted that the addition of the Hearts of Pine could bring increased sponsorship and player development to the region.
Looking Ahead to 2027
The club is now moving toward the operational phase. Season ticket deposits for the inaugural season will go on sale Thursday, June 11, starting at 12 p.m.

Initial ticket plans are expected to include approximately six home matches. Further details regarding single-match tickets and seat selection may be released in the coming months.
As preparations continue, the club is likely to share more information regarding its technical staff, players, and overall team identity.
