Red Bull Heavy Metal: Street Snowboarding Returns to Boston 2026
As the Winter Olympics conclude, snow sports enthusiasts in Boston have another event to look forward to. Red Bull Heavy Metal, a street snowboarding competition, is returning to Boston City Hall Plaza this Saturday, February 21, 2026.
A Different Kind of Snowboarding
Unlike traditional freestyle snowboarding seen at the Olympics, which features tricks performed off jumps and rails, street snowboarding utilizes urban obstacles. Competitors will navigate handrails, ledges, stairs and fences. Judging focuses on “expression,” according to competition director Joe Sexton – how a trick is performed and the style with which it’s executed.
To prepare City Hall Plaza for the event, organizers are importing over a hundred tons of snow from Loon Mountain. Despite natural snowfall in the Boston area, Sexton explained that a substantial snow base is needed to withstand the repeated use during the competition.
Building on Last Year’s Success
This marks the second year for Red Bull Heavy Metal in Boston, following a “huge success” in 2025. Last year’s event drew thousands of spectators, attracted by its free admission and convenient location. Top athletes, including Olympian Jess Perlmutter and street snowboarder Zeb Powell, participated in the inaugural competition, with Powell returning this year.
Organizers are expanding on last year’s event by adding a jumbotron to improve visibility for spectators. The event will also feature food trucks, vendors, and music. Gates open at 2:00 p.m., with the competition running from 2:30 p.m. To 5:30 p.m. Winners will receive several thousand dollars in prizes.
