Suspected Ebola Patient Transferred to GHC Hospital in Porto Alegre
A 64-year-old man with confirmed malaria and suspected Ebola was transferred Friday from Novo Hamburgo to the Grupo Hospitalar Conceição (GHC) in Porto Alegre, according to a statement from the hospital. The patient’s recent travel to Uganda led to the clinical-epidemiological suspicion of Ebola.
The transfer began around 3:20 p.m. at the Unidade de Pronto Atendimento (UPA) Canudos in Novo Hamburgo. The patient arrived at the GHC facility in the northern zone of the capital at approximately 4:10 p.m.
To minimize risk, the ambulance used a service entrance at the rear of the GHC. While the vehicle briefly stopped at the 24-hour emergency entrance, staff redirected the team to an auxiliary gate.
The ambulance was equipped with specialized gear to prevent the contamination of health agents during transport. GHC officials noted that the service access was blocked until the ambulance departed, which caused a brief queue of trucks delivering food and equipment to the hospital.
How is the patient being treated?
The patient is currently held in a sanitized and isolated area, according to GHC. The hospital stated that this setup allows for medical assistance without contact with other sectors of the facility.

GHC confirmed that exclusive teams are managing the case. These staff members are trained in the proper donning and doffing of personal protective equipment (PPE) and have access to exclusive equipment.
What happens next for the patient?
A sample has been collected and sent to the Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz), the national reference laboratory. Fiocruz will determine whether the Ebola infection is confirmed or discarded.
If the results confirm an Ebola infection, GHC pointed out that the patient could be transported to reference hospitals in either São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro.
