TAXI TERROR – Driver killed, passengers injured in Macassar ambush

February 10, 2026 discoverhiddenusacom News

A taxi driver was fatally shot and three passengers wounded, in Macassar, Western Cape, on Monday, February 9, 2026. The shooting occurred along Magdaline Gilla Road at approximately 4:20 pm, as gunmen opened fire on the vehicle from a bakkie before fleeing the scene.

Details of the Incident

According to police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg, Macassar police responded to reports of the shooting and found the victims suffering from gunshot wounds. The 36-year-old taxi driver was pronounced dead at the scene. An adult female and two adult males were transported to a medical facility for treatment.

Did You Know? Approximately 15 shots were fired at the taxi, according to a passenger’s account.

One passenger’s son shared a harrowing account of the event, stating his father was seated in the back of the taxi and survived by what he described as “God’s protection.” He recounted how a bakkie trailing the taxi suddenly stopped, and occupants began shooting as the driver was dropping off a passenger.

Taxi Association Response

Nkululeko Sityebi, spokesperson for the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) in the Western Cape, confirmed the deceased driver was a member of their organization. Sityebi expressed uncertainty regarding the motive for the killing, stating it was too early in the year to determine the cause.

Expert Insight: The incident raises concerns about a potential resurgence of taxi violence in the region, following a period of relative calm last year that included a month-long closure of routes due to similar conflicts.

Sityebi stated that CATA trusts law enforcement will investigate and prosecute those responsible. He expressed hope that this incident is isolated and does not signal a return to the widespread taxi violence experienced in the previous year, which impacted routes between Khayelitsha, Mfuleni, Lwandle, and Somerset West.

Ongoing Investigation

Serious and Violent Crime detectives are investigating both murder and attempted murder cases related to the shooting. Police are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or utilize the MySAPS mobile application anonymously.
