U2 song protests killing of Renée Good by US Ice agent in politically charged new release – The Irish Times
U2 has released a new EP, Days of Ash, described as an “immediate response” to current events and inspired by individuals fighting for freedom. The collection of five new songs and a poem addresses recent tragedies and conflicts around the world, marking the Irish band’s first original material in nearly nine years.
A Musical Response to Global Events
The EP’s release, coinciding with Ash Wednesday, is a deliberate statement. Lead singer Bono stated the tracks were “impatient to be out in the world,” characterizing them as “songs of defiance and dismay, of lamentation.” He expressed concern over the normalization of “awfulness” in the media and the need to actively resist it.
Stories of Loss and Resistance
Four of the five songs focus on individuals whose lives were tragically cut short. The opening track, “American Obituary,” centers on the fatal shooting of Renée Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) agent on January 7th. Lyrics detail the circumstances of her death and a subsequent, unsubstantiated label applied by officials.
Another song, “Song of the Future,” tells the story of Sarina Esmailzadeh, a 16-year-old who, according to Amnesty International, was killed by Iranian security forces during protests against religious rule. The fifth song focuses on a Ukrainian soldier’s readiness to fight for freedom.
Collaborations and Upcoming Release
The EP features contributions from Ukrainian musician-turned-soldier Taras Topolia and British singer Ed Sheeran on the track “Yours Eternally,” presented as a letter from a soldier in Ukraine. Bono first met Topolia in a Kyiv metro station in May 2022, shortly after the invasion. A short documentary film accompanying “Yours Eternally” is scheduled for release on February 24th, the fourth anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine.
The EP also includes a poem by Israeli writer Yehuda Amichai and a song dedicated to Awdah Hathaleen, a Palestinian teacher and activist killed by an Israeli settler in the West Bank last July.
