West Bengal Elections 2024: 480 CAPF Companies Deployed for Poll Security
Kolkata – The central government has authorized the initial deployment of at least 480 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in West Bengal, ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. This move, communicated to the state government on Friday, aims to bolster security as the electoral process unfolds.
Preparing for Polls
The first contingent of approximately 240 CAPF companies is expected to arrive on March 1, with a second batch following on March 10. The deployment is intended to cover a range of election-related duties, including area domination, confidence-building measures, security at polling stations, guarding Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and strong rooms, and arrangements for counting centers.
The Election Commission (EC) is scheduled to publish the final electoral roll on February 28, and the announcement of election dates is anticipated in March. Polls are currently projected to take place in April.
Political Reactions
Kunal Ghosh, a leader with the Trinamool Congress (TMC), questioned the deployment, stating that law and order currently remain the responsibility of the state government. He suggested the central government’s actions stem from a fear of rejection by the people of Bengal.
Samik Bhattacharya, the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), expressed confidence in his party’s prospects, asserting that the TMC is “all set to lose” the elections regardless of the level of central force deployment or the conduct of the electoral process.
The central government has requested the state government to finalize a detailed deployment plan in consultation with the CAPF forces and to provide necessary logistical support, including transportation, accommodation, and other arrangements.
