Willamette Law Launches Alaska Summer Program for Law Students
Willamette University School of Law is launching a five-week summer program in Anchorage, Alaska, open to 2L and 3L students from any law school accredited by the American Bar Association. The Alaska Law Summer Program, hosted in partnership with the University of Alaska Anchorage, builds on decades of collaboration with Alaska’s legal community.
Expanding Legal Education to Address Regional Needs
The program represents a natural progression of Willamette Law’s longstanding ties to Alaska, according to Lexie Zirschky, Associate Dean for Student Affairs & Administration. Willamette Law has cultivated a strong network of alumni within the Alaska Bar, supported by existing externship and clerkship opportunities, and post-graduate employment pathways.
A key driver behind the program is a shared challenge faced by Alaska and Oregon: a shortage of attorneys, particularly in rural areas, leading to limited access to justice. Willamette Law’s investment in Alaska reflects its commitment to preparing lawyers for areas of greatest need.
A Unique Legal Landscape
Alaska presents a distinctive legal environment shaped by Indigenous and tribal law, extensive federal land holdings, and complex issues related to environmental and natural resources. “Alaska is a place where the law is deeply connected to the people, the land, and the community,” Zirschky stated.
The program curriculum, led by Willamette Law faculty including Assistant Professor of Law Sheryl Buske, will incorporate collaboration with Alaska-based judges, attorneys, and community leaders. Focus areas include environmental and natural resources law, rural criminal justice, Alaskan legal practice, and Indigenous and tribal law.
Learning will extend beyond traditional classroom settings. Students will visit Alaska courtrooms, the Alaska Native Heritage Center, and the Anchorage Museum, and connect with legal professionals and Willamette Law alumni. Optional excursions include opportunities to explore glaciers, hike Flattop Mountain, and visit Denali National Park & Preserve.
The program is designed for a small, engaged cohort, with housing accommodations included. This structure aims to foster personalized education, mentorship, and strong peer relationships.
Students will explore pro bono and post-graduate opportunities, building professional networks in a market with demonstrated demand for attorneys. Participants are expected to gain practical experience and confidence navigating complex legal systems.
