Berry and Cindric secure final spots in NASCAR’s Clash after thrilling last chance heat | News, Sports, Jobs
After a weather-related delay, the final two spots in NASCAR’s preseason exhibition race, The Clash, were secured on Wednesday by Josh Berry and Austin Cindric in a thrilling last chance qualifying heat at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Qualifying Drama at Bowman Gray
Josh Berry, driving the No. 21 for Wood Brothers Racing, won the heat race decisively. Austin Cindric faced a much closer battle, spending over 15 laps racing side-by-side with Corey Lajoie for the second qualifying position.
The competition wasn’t without its drama. AJ Allmendinger attempted to aid Cindric by giving him a shove, hoping to move both drivers ahead of Lajoie, but the maneuver ultimately secured Cindric’s spot.
Looking Ahead to the Main Event
Kyle Larson, the reigning Cup Series champion, will start The Clash from the pole position, alongside Hendrick Motorsports teammate William Byron, the two-time defending Daytona 500 winner.
Denny Hamlin will start sixth in his first race since a dramatic loss in the Cup title in November. Hamlin revealed he re-injured a torn labrum during the cleanup of debris following a house fire in December that impacted his family.
Several drivers, including Ricky Stenhouse Jr. And Todd Gilliland, assisted with snow removal at Bowman Gray Stadium to prepare the facility for the event.
What’s Next for NASCAR
Teams will next report to Daytona International Speedway in preparation for the season-opening Daytona 500 on February 15th. Qualifying for the pole is scheduled for next Wednesday, with additional races on Thursday to determine the remaining starting positions.
