Graz, Austria, played host to the “Köpfe Wahl 2025” awards ceremony on Thursday evening at the Styria Media Center. The event recognized individuals from Southern and Western Styria for their contributions across various fields. Seven individuals were honored for their achievements in areas ranging from volunteer work to sports and gastronomy.

Recognizing Community Contributions

Elke Krois received the award for Volunteerism & Social Engagement, sponsored by the Arbeiterkammer Steiermark (AK Steiermark). Krois recently took leadership of the Stainz Youth Red Cross group, growing its membership from eight to over 35 members. She also serves as a district representative for youth groups and is organizing the Red Cross State Youth Competition in Stainz this June. “I really enjoy working with young people and want to create a space where everyone feels comfortable expressing their feelings,” Krois stated.

Innovation in Wine and Gastronomy

Johannes Pichler was named “Newcomer,” sponsored by the Wirtschaftsbund. The Pichler-Schober winery in St. Nikolai im Sausal has been family-run for six generations. Pichler, after studying viticulture, joined the family business in 2019. Their Sauvignon Blanc recently earned the title of Austria’s best, increasing the winery’s reputation beyond the region.

Birgit Schwaiger of Gasthaus Buchhaus-Ritt in Voitsberg received the “Host” award, sponsored by Erlebnisregion Graz. Schwaiger has led the restaurant for 15 years, supported by her parents and a team of seven. The establishment combines tradition with a modern concept, offering breakfast, lunch, and seasonal specialties. The restaurant expanded in 2009, converting the former butcher shop into additional dining space.

Karl Lenz was honored in the “Culture” category, sponsored by Bühnen Graz. Lenz, a passionate musician from Groß St. Florian, previously served as chairman and director of the “Steirische Sänger- und Musikantentreffen” (SUMT). He has been a voice on Radio Steiermark and now broadcasts on the private folk music radio station VM1. He also served as a judge at the Styrian Harmonica Competition for 20 years.

Anton Vötsch, a 21-year-old from Söding, took home the “Sports” award, sponsored by Volksbank Steiermark. Vötsch competed in the challenging “Six Days” motorcycle endurance race in Italy and was crowned Austrian Enduro Champion in the Junior Class. He is now preparing to compete in the European Enduro Championship for Juniors.

Finally, Willy Pichay was awarded in the “Entertainment” category, sponsored by Cineplexx. The 24-year-old from Stainz, also known as William Pichay Hermann, performs as a “singing chimney sweep,” combining traditional folk music with his trade. He began playing music after attending an Edlseer concert and has since become a popular figure in the Styrian folk music scene.
