Muni Long Shares Her Battle With Lupus and Life-Saving Lung Transplant

Muni Long Shares Her Battle With Lupus and Life-Saving Lung Transplant

June 23, 2026 discoverhiddenusacom Entertainment

Grammy-winning singer Muni Long underwent a double lung transplant after complications from lupus nearly killed her, according to an interview with Robin Roberts on Good Morning America. Long reported that doctors gave her one week to live, leaving her to choose between hospice care and the transplant procedure.

Why did Muni Long need a double lung transplant?

Lupus, which Long was diagnosed with in 2014, aggressively attacked her lungs. During a six-city stretch of Brandy and Monica’s “The Boy Is Mine Tour” in a brutal northeastern winter, the singer developed pneumonia. Long exited the tour in November 2025 after the condition worsened.

Long told Roberts she woke up in a hospital bed surrounded by six doctors following the Thanksgiving holiday. She noted that the cold environment is detrimental to those with autoimmune diseases.

Did You Know? Her single “The Richest,” recorded in February 2025, serves as the final studio document of her original voice.

How has the transplant affected her voice?

Long stated that her voice is now “totally different” and “actually better” following the surgery. However, she expressed uncertainty regarding her ability to perform. Doctors have given her a timeline of six months to a year.

The singer admitted that her initial concern during the crisis was her voice, but she ultimately prioritized her quality of life. She told Roberts, “I can’t sing if I’m not here.”

What are the risks for Black women with lupus?

According to the Lupus Foundation of America, lupus strikes Black women at roughly three times the rate of white women. One in 250 Black American women will develop the condition.

What are the risks for Black women with lupus?

The foundation lists lupus among the top 10 causes of death for Black women between 15 and 44. Long noted that these women are often expected to “show up and be everything for everybody,” which may lead to ignoring symptoms.

Long compared her experience to that of Toni Braxton, who was diagnosed in 2008 after collapsing on stage in Las Vegas. Braxton’s management reportedly advised her to keep the diagnosis secret because sick singers were told they do not get insured.

Expert Insight: Samantha Carter notes that the intersection of systemic health disparities and the cultural pressure to remain the “strong friend” can create a dangerous delay in treatment. For high-profile performers, the financial pressure to maintain an image of health for insurance and touring purposes may further complicate critical medical interventions.

What happens next for the singer?

Six months after the transplant, Long told Roberts she is currently asymptomatic and free of infections. Her recovery now focuses on physical health and vocal rehabilitation.

A follow-up appointment scheduled for August may determine the current status of her vocal cords. Long indicated she intends to prioritize her own health moving forward to better care for others.
