Phoenix Freeway Closures: Jan 23-26 Road Restrictions & Updates

Phoenix Freeway Closures: Jan 23-26 Road Restrictions & Updates

January 23, 2026 discoverhiddenusacom News

Motorists in the Phoenix metropolitan area should anticipate significant travel disruptions this weekend due to wintry weather and scheduled freeway construction. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has announced lane restrictions and closures impacting Interstate 17 and Loop 202, beginning January 23rd and continuing through January 26th.

Interstate 17 Restrictions

Interstate 17 will experience narrowed lanes between State Route 74 (Carefree Highway) and Anthem Way. Both northbound and southbound traffic will be reduced to a single lane from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. on January 23rd and 24th. Further restrictions include a northbound lane closure from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. January 23rd-25th, and a southbound lane closure from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. January 23rd-25th. These restrictions are in place for lane striping.

Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) Closures

Arizona Avenue and Lindsay Road will be closed in both directions at Loop 202 from 10 p.m. on January 23rd to 5 a.m. on January 26th. This closure is related to a widening project. Drivers are advised to use alternate cross streets such as McQueen, Cooper, and Gilbert roads. The westbound Loop 202 on-ramp at Arizona Avenue will also be closed, with drivers encouraged to use the Alma School Road on-ramp instead.

Did You Know? ADOT is undertaking these improvements as part of the Regional Transportation Plan for the Maricopa County region.
Expert Insight: Coordinating infrastructure projects with anticipated weather events highlights the complexities of maintaining transportation networks. These planned closures, while disruptive in the short term, are essential for long-term improvements to the Phoenix area’s freeway system.

ADOT advises drivers to allow extra travel time and prepare to utilize detour routes. The current schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather. Real-time highway conditions can be found at az511.gov, through the az511 app, or by calling 511.

The road restrictions coincide with cooler temperatures, showers, and an arctic blast impacting areas east of Arizona.
