Indianapolis, Ind. – UNI track and field senior Katy Stephens delivered a strong performance at the USATF Indoor Combined Events Championships on Sunday, securing ninth place in a field of 13 competitors. The Burlington, Iowa native’s total score of 4,105 points marked a significant achievement in her athletic career.
A Season of Records
Stephens, who previously claimed the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) pentathlon title in 2024 and finished third the prior year, showcased remarkable improvement throughout the competition. She established new personal bests in four of the five pentathlon events, demonstrating consistent progress, and dedication.
Breaking Barriers
The highlight of Stephens’ performance was a new school record in the high jump, clearing a height of five feet, ten and a half inches. This leap surpassed her previous record by half an inch, solidifying her position as a leading athlete within the UNI programme. She also achieved career-best times in the 60-meter hurdles (8.78 seconds) and the 800 meters (2:29.65).
In addition to her record-breaking high jump, Stephens also recorded a career-best long jump of 19 feet, four and one-quarter inches, and a season-best shot put throw of 39 feet, 10 inches. Earlier this indoor season, competing unattached, Stephens won the pentathlon at the Nebraska’s Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational with 4,038 points, becoming the third UNI athlete to surpass 4,000 points in the event.
