U2: Nové EP – Vzdor a hrůza v nových písních
U2 has released a new EP, Days of Ash, comprised of songs born from a sense of urgency in response to current global events. The band describes the music as a defiant and dismayed reaction to the “real horrors” unfolding daily, while simultaneously working on more optimistic material for a forthcoming album later this year.
A Response to Global Turmoil
Bono, the band’s lead singer, stated the creative process felt “incredibly enjoyable,” but the tone of Days of Ash differs significantly from the music they are currently developing. He explained the songs “couldn’t wait” to be released, serving as a necessary expression of resistance and grief. The Edge, U2’s guitarist, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the band’s belief in a world free from fear and where cultural identity is respected.
Songs Rooted in Real-Life Tragedy
Several tracks on the EP directly address specific instances of violence and injustice. “American Obituary” is inspired by the death of Renée Nicole Goodová, who was fatally shot by an ICE agent during a raid in Minneapolis, Minnesota on January 7th. “Song of the Future” centers on the story of Sarina Esmailzadeh, a 16-year-old Iranian girl killed by security forces during 2022 protests. “One Life At A Time” honors Awdah Hathaleen, a Palestinian man killed by an Israeli settler in the West Bank last year.
Collaboration and Solidarity
The song “Yours Eternally” features contributions from Ed Sheeran and Taras Topolia, a Ukrainian musician who is currently serving as a soldier. Bono and The Edge traveled to Kyiv in the spring of 2022, at the invitation of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, to perform in a metro station. This visit led to a connection between Bono, Topolia, and Sheeran, with “Yours Eternally” originating from a concept proposed by Topolia and serving as a message from a Ukrainian soldier.
Accompanying Release of Propaganda
Alongside Days of Ash, U2 is releasing a special issue of Propaganda, a magazine historically linked to the band. Inspired by the punk zine culture, the new edition, titled “U2 – Days Of Ash: Six Postcards From The Present… Wish We Weren’t Here,” features interviews with the director and producer of the “Yours Eternally” documentary, Ilja Michajlus and Piotr Verzilov, respectively, as well as musician and soldier Taras Topolia. It also includes song lyrics, notes from all four U2 members, and a Q&A with Bono.
Drummer Larry Mullen Jr. Believes the new songs will stand among U2’s best work, while bassist Adam Clayton expressed excitement about the timing of the release.
